A Fabulous First Month!

Kindergarten is in full swing!  The children have had a great first month learning and practicing the rules and routines of the classroom.  For many students, Kindergarten is their first experience in a school setting, and I’m so impressed with how quickly they’ve caught on to our daily routine. Image

We are now fully into our curriculum.  These past few weeks, we’ve been focusing on patterns, colours, fall and seasonal changes, and families.  We have also practiced proper letter and number formation, printing names the Kindergarten way (capital first letter followed by lowercase letters), and our fine motor skills with some cutting and gluing crafts.  We have also started our journals, which we draw/write in 2-3 times a week, and a daily Directed Drawing book.

In the primary grades, the curriculum is integrated, which means that when we do an activity it often involves several learning areas at once.  A good example of this is our morning routine.  We begin with some welcome songs, chit-chat, a Morning Message, and a review of the shape of our day.  We count to 100 by 1s, 5s, and 10s while doing an action (the Twist and jumping jacks are favorites!) and the children love to count backwards from 10 while we sing “Zoom Zoom Zoom, We’re Going to the Moon.”  During this 20 minute period, we are developing literacy, numeracy, and social skills!

I look forward to meeting you at the Open House on Thursday, September 27th.  If you can’t make it, please feel free to stop by after school and check out some of the learning centers and projects we’ve been doing in class!  Your child would love to show you some of his or her favorite things about Kindergarten.

Morning Message

Morning Message

The Morning Message is interactive. We read it together, sounding out missing letters. The Busy Bee unscrambles his/her name and completes the pattern, asking for help from friends if he/she isn’t sure. We also search for a mystery letter and count capitals/lowercase. As the year goes on, the Morning Message will change and become more challenging.

J. & E. working together to build an elaborate foam block creation

Congratulations to everyone, parents and kids, on a great first week! Wednesday was our first full day as a complete class and the children were very excited to get to know their new friends.  We are still working hard at learning our routines, and in these early weeks the kids are bound to be exhausted in the early evening!  Kindergarten is a lot of fun and a lot of work, and for many children it is their first experience in a structured school setting…so expect a lot of early bedtimes!

This week, we explored some of the centers in our classroom, enjoyed some music and movement activities, and practiced writing our name “The Kindergarten Way” (first letter capitalized followed by lowercase letters).  We also had our first music class, visited the library, and went on a school wide hunt for Pete the Cat. We followed his clues, but he decided to head home…he left us some cookies to decorate though, which was a sweet treat to end our first full day.

Thank you for sending inside shoes to school and making sure your child has a healthy snack/lunch and a water bottle each day! Even as the weather cools, it is important to bring water to class, as we are very physically active in Kindergarten.

In the coming days, each student will bring home the sharing bag (a bee themed pillowcase), which is a signal that they are the Busy Bee for the next day.  They will have special jobs in the class such as assisting with calendar routines, helping the teacher, and leading the line.  They also get to bring something for sharing during circle time.  This month’s sharing theme is “Families.”  Please help your child choose a photograph of his or her family to bring to school to show the class.  I encourage the children to tell us a little bit about their families, such as their names, what they like to do with their families for fun, etc, so you may want to talk about this at home beforehand.

Have a great weekend everyone, and don’t forget to bring in your home reading bag on Monday!  See you soon 🙂
